Frequently asked questions about the online Arabic keyboard

What is an online Arabic keyboard?

It is a web page that lets you type Arabic without installing anything. You press normal English keys and they turn into Arabic letters. Then you copy the text and paste it into WhatsApp, Word, email or a form.

Is this Arabic keyboard free?

Yes. It is free, has no ads and needs no sign-up or account.

How do I type Arabic with an English keyboard?

Click the box and type by sound. The letter a types ا, b types ب and m types م. For the heavy letters, use a capital: H types ح, S types ص and T types ط. For sh, kh, th, dh and gh, type the two letters and you get one Arabic letter.

Which Arabic keyboard layout should I use?

Use Transliteration if you know the English keyboard and want to type right away. Use Standard Arabic (101) if you want the layout that Windows uses and native typists know by heart. Phonetic is a middle choice with one key for each letter and no letter pairs.

How do I type harakat (tashkeel) like fatha, kasra and shadda?

Type the letter first, then the mark. In the Transliteration layout, [ gives fatha, ] gives damma, \ gives kasra, ~ gives shadda and the double-quote key gives sukun. Hold Shift with the first three for the tanween versions. Every layout has its own keys, and the harakat table on this page lists them all.

How do I type hamza, alif with hamza and lam-alif?

In the Transliteration layout, a capital A gives أ, a capital I gives إ, a capital O gives ؤ, a capital E gives ئ, and the apostrophe gives ء. A capital B types the lam-alif ligature لا. You can also just type ل and then ا, and your device joins them for you.

How do I type Arabic numbers?

Use the 1 2 3 / ١ ٢ ٣ switch above the keyboard. Switch it on and the number keys type Arabic-Indic digits. Switch it off for the digits 0 to 9 that you see in English.

Can I use this Arabic keyboard on my phone?

Yes. Tap the box and type with your phone keyboard. The letters turn into Arabic as you type. You can also tap the Arabic keys on the screen.

How do I copy my Arabic text into WhatsApp, Word or Google Docs?

Press Copy text, then paste with Ctrl+V on a computer. On a phone, press and hold where you want the text and choose Paste. You can also press Save .txt to keep the text as a file.

Do I need to install an Arabic keyboard?

No. This page works in your browser, so it also works on school, library and work computers where you cannot change settings. If you type Arabic every day, adding the real Arabic keyboard to your device is faster in the long run.

Why does my Arabic text start on the right?

Arabic is written from right to left. Your first letter lands on the right and the next letters follow toward the left. That is normal.

What do the numbers 3, 7 and 5 mean when people write Arabic with English letters?

They stand for Arabic letters that English does not have. 3 is ع, 7 is ح, 5 is خ, 2 is ء and 6 is ط. A few numbers change from one country to another, so use the chat Arabic table on this page as a guide, not a rule.

How do I type my name in Arabic?

Say your name out loud, then type the consonants and long vowels you hear. Skip the short vowels, because Arabic usually does not write them. Names have more than one spelling, so ask an Arabic speaker to check it before you print it or use it on a document.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. The keyboard runs in your browser. What you type is not sent to our server or saved. It is gone when you close the page.

Can I type Persian or Urdu letters here?

You can type پ چ ڤ گ with the Transliteration layout, which helps for Persian and some dialects. For full Urdu typing, use our Urdu Keyboard Online page instead.

Where is the ذ key on the Arabic keyboard?

On the standard Arabic (101) keyboard, ذ sits on the top-left key, the one next to the number 1. Some sticker sets leave it out, so check yours. On this page, type dh in the Transliteration layout, or press the v key in the Phonetic layout.
