This free Urdu typing test shows your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy. Pick 1, 3 or 5 minutes and start typing. No Urdu keyboard needed: each English key types an Urdu letter.
How do I take the Urdu typing test?
This is a free online Urdu typing test. It runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install. Here is how it works.
- Pick a time. Choose 1, 3 or 5 minutes under the text.
- Click the Urdu text. The timer starts on your first key, so get ready first.
- Type word by word. Press Space after every word.
- Fix mistakes with Backspace. A fixed mistake still counts against accuracy.
- Read your result. Press Restart to retry or New text for a different passage.
Finish early? More text is added until time ends. Choose “Show keyboard” if you want to see which key types which letter.
Which test length should I choose?
| Length | Best for |
|---|---|
| 1 minute | A quick check, or a weekly progress note |
| 3 minutes | A steady score. This is the default |
| 5 minutes | Building stamina and exam-style practice |
How is Urdu typing speed measured?
Like most typing tests, we count every 5 letters as one word. Only letters in correctly typed words count toward your speed.
WPM
Correct letters ÷ 5, then ÷ minutes.
600 correct letters in 3 minutes = 120 words = 40 WPM
Characters per minute
WPM × 5. Some sites show this instead of WPM.
40 WPM = 200 CPM
Accuracy
Correct letters out of every letter you tried, even ones you fixed later.
95 right out of 100 = 95%
Mistakes
Every wrong letter you typed, even if you fixed it.
What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Counts everything you typed.
Takes the errors away. Our speed score is closer to this.
Exam boards may use their own formula. Read the notice for your test.
Why does accuracy matter as much as speed?
- Mistakes slow you down and lower your net score.
- Exam-prep guides say some government tests count punctuation and capital letters as errors.
- Learn the keys first, then build speed.
What is a good Urdu typing speed?
Typing sites usually call 25 to 30 WPM average and 30 to 40 WPM good, at 95% accuracy or better. These are guide figures, not official rules.
| Speed | Level | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15 WPM | Just starting | Learn where the keys are. Ignore speed for now. |
| 15 to 24 WPM | Learning | Push your accuracy to 95%. |
| 25 to 30 WPM | Average | Everyday typing feels comfortable. |
| 30 to 40 WPM | Good | Many clerk-job guides aim for this range. |
| 40 to 50+ WPM | Strong | Data-entry and court-typing guides call this excellent. |
Where these numbers come from: the first two rows are our own rough bands. The rest follow figures from Monkeytype Pro, Dozro and Divyatyping. We found no official Urdu benchmark. For a job, the advertisement sets the target.
How long does it take to get faster?
- One practice site says 25 to 30 minutes a day can reach about 20 to 25 WPM in 3 to 4 weeks.
- The same site says 30 WPM or more can take 2 to 3 months.
- Treat this as a rough guide. Everyone learns at a different speed.
What should I do with my score?
A test only shows where you are. To get faster, do some Urdu typing practice with the 12 free lessons, then come back and test again.
| Your result | Your next step |
|---|---|
| Under 15 WPM, or accuracy under 90% | Start the course with Lesson 1: Home Row. |
| 15 to 24 WPM | Work on the keys you miss. Try Lesson 3: Upper Row or Lesson 5: Lower Row. |
| 25 to 30 WPM | Practise whole words and sentences in Lesson 7 and Lesson 8. |
| 30 WPM and above | Build stamina with Lesson 9: Paragraphs and the 5-minute test. |
Which keyboard layout does this test use?
A phonetic layout: each Urdu letter sits on the English key with a similar sound. This is the layout taught in our own Urdu typing course.
Other phonetic keyboards, such as the CRULP layout, follow the same idea, but a few keys can sit in different places. Check the chart before you practise.

| Layout | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|

| Windows Urdu keyboard | Built into Windows, with its own key positions. Not phonetic. | People who use it every day |
| CRULP phonetic | A free phonetic keyboard for Windows made by CRULP. | Phonetic typing in Word and browsers |
| InPage | Urdu publishing software with its own layout, still used for newspapers and printing. | Print and publishing work |

Taking an exam? Sites disagree on whether exams use phonetic or standard layouts. The job notice or test centre decides, so ask before you choose.
Do I need an Urdu keyboard to take this test?
No. Type on your normal English keyboard. If you already have a phonetic Urdu keyboard installed, that usually works too.
Can I take the Urdu typing test on my phone?

No computer at home? Only 14% of Pakistani households owned a computer, laptop or tablet in the 2024-25 government survey, while 70% had internet access (Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, reported by FAFEN). What is the difference between Roman Urdu typing and an Urdu typing test?
You write Urdu words with English letters, like “kya haal hai”. A tool turns them into کیا حال ہے.
Each key always types one fixed Urdu letter. You learn the real layout, and your hands remember it.
| To type | Press these keys |
|---|---|
| سلام | S L A M |
| السلام | A L S L A M |
You type the letters of the Urdu spelling, not the English sound of the word.
Is this test good for government job exams?
It helps you practise speed and accuracy. It is not an official exam and gives no certificate.
About the numbers you may see: some exam-prep sites say PPSC clerical posts ask for 30 to 35 WPM at 90% accuracy or more, and some FPSC posts ask for 40 or more. They link to no official source and we could not confirm them. Read the real job advertisement.
